What is Celiac Disease?

Celiac disease, sometimes called celiac sprue, coeliac or gluten-sensitive enteropathy, is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. View a range of hidden gluten sources.

If you have celiac disease, eating gluten triggers an immune response in your small intestine, and in turn, potentially your entire body. Celiac disease is a serious, genetic autoimmune disorder and when a person with Celiac Disease eats gluten, the protein interferes with the absorption of nutrients from food, damaging a part of the small intestine called villi.

Avoiding gluten is an absolute must for Celiacs, even that little crumb, is NOT okay.
