Commonly Asked Questions About Toothpaste
Is Toothpaste Gluten Free?
Gluten seems to hide in many different places, especially where you’d least expect it to be. Toothpaste is one of the last things many of us think about containing gluten, but it can.
Understanding what ingredients to watch for and which brands are gluten free is needed to protect your oral health.
When searching for a gluten free toothpaste, review the thickening agents used in the particular toothpaste brand. Many toothpastes use a grain-based thickener and isn’t always the easiest ingredient to notice. Additionally, residual gluten traces could contaminate gluten free products such as:
- Hydrolyzed wheat gluten
- Triticum Vulgare
- Avena Sativa
If the toothpaste uses “natural flavours” within their listed ingredients, these are often times malt derived and grain based.
One popular gluten free ingredient used is cellulose gum, which is an alternative thickening agent derived from plants. Be cautious however as not all toothpastes using cellulose gum are gluten free due to additional glutenous ingredients, as well as factory production standards in shared facilities.
Not ALL toothpaste is gluten free, but there are many options available that are!
Which Toothpaste Brands are Gluten Free?
With the surge in Celiac Disease, many of the leading toothpaste manufacturers and brands are stating whether or not their toothpastes contain gluten.
Gluten free toothpastes offer the same cleansing effect as regular toothpaste, due in part to the same active ingredients, including xylitol, baking soda and calcium phosphate.
Most toothpaste manufacturers have information about their gluten free toothpaste ingredients on their websites, as well as list a toll-free number on their products, giving you the option to call and ask questions before making a final decision on your purchase.
Is There Gluten Free Toothpaste for Children?
Keeping your children gluten free can be hard, without having to worry about their toothpaste having hidden gluten.
There are several popular toothpaste manufacturers that offer gluten free toothpaste for kids, including:
- Orajel Baby & Toddler Toothpaste
- Oral B Stages Kids’ Toothpaste
There are many different types of toothpastes available today, but it may not have occurred to some to consider gluten free toothpaste. Fortunately, with there being an abundance of gluten free toothpaste options available, finding them on store shelves isn’t difficult nowadays.
