Senza Gluten: A Celiac Disease Safe Haven in the Heart of Greenwich Village

https://senzaglutennyc.com/

For those living with Celiac disease or severe gluten intolerance, the dream of walking into an Italian restaurant and ordering anything on the menu—from the warm bread basket to the decadent tiramisu—often feels like a fantasy. However, since 2014, Senza Gluten in New York City has turned that dream into a delicious reality. Located on a charming street in Greenwich Village, this 100% dedicated gluten free establishment has become a global destination for safe, authentic, and soulful Italian dining.

The Philosophy of Safety and Community

The foundation of Senza Gluten is built on a deep understanding of the challenges faced by the gluten free community. The restaurant was founded with a singular mission: to provide a space where “safety, beautiful food, and a sense of community” intersect. Unlike many restaurants that offer “gluten-friendly” options with a side of cross-contamination anxiety, Senza Gluten maintains a strictly dedicated kitchen.

From the staff training to the sourcing of ingredients, every step of the process is handled with meticulous care. This commitment to safety is personal; several team members actually have Celiac disease themselves, ensuring that the empathy for the guest experience is baked into every dish.

Reclaiming the Classics: The Menu Highlights

When crafting the menu, the team at Senza Gluten focused on the dishes that the gluten free community misses most. They asked friends and diners what they dreamed of eating again, and the results define their signature offerings.

  • The Bread Basket: Perhaps the most celebrated starter, the house-made gluten free bread allows diners to partake in the quintessential Italian pre-meal ritual without hesitation.
  • Traditional Pasta and Gnocchi: Using traditional techniques and innovative gluten free flours, Senza Gluten serves up silky fettuccine, hearty lasagna, and pillow-soft gnocchi. The Chicken Parmesan and Lasagna Bolognese are frequently cited by regulars as “life-changing” recreations of the original wheat-based classics.
  • Dolci (Dessert): No meal at Senza Gluten is complete without their Tiramisu. Creamy, light, and perfectly balanced, it stands as a testament to the chef’s ability to master gluten free pastry and dessert.

A Full Dining Experience: Brunch to Dinner

Senza Gluten isn’t just a dinner spot; it’s a full-day culinary destination. Their Weekend Brunch (served Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 3:45 PM) offers a rare opportunity for gluten free diners to enjoy classic breakfast favourites, including fluffy pancakes and savory egg dishes, in a safe environment.

The atmosphere of the restaurant at 206 Sullivan Street is cozy and inviting, making it perfect for everything from a casual lunch to a milestone celebration. Over the years, the restaurant has played host to proposals, birthdays, and community meetups, including collaborations with the Celiac Disease Center of Columbia University.

Planning Your Visit

Senza Gluten is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, so reservations are highly recommended. A unique quirk of the establishment to keep in mind: they accept AMEX or Cash only. Being prepared for this ensures your focus remains entirely on the incredible food and the rare luxury of dining without fear.

Whether you are a lifelong Celiac or simply looking for an exceptional Italian meal in Manhattan, Senza Gluten offers an experience that proves you never have to sacrifice flavor for safety.

As a family of gluten-intolerants, we make it a point to seek out dedicated restauranteurs who automatically cater to our needs. Senza Gluten was high on our NYC list, and did not disappoint! Every single menu item is guaranteed gluten-free, including the drinks. The place itself is charming & understated, just off Bleecker. The food is to-die-for good, and the owner is one of the most genuine humans I have ever met. Know-before-you-go: they only accept cash or AmEx. Still…GO!

Exceptional food. The bread, which is a simple thing, was quite notable in its quality. I also had a pasta dish and a cake, also exceptional. There was a slight trifle in miscommunication and its about as pricey as the extremely high-end Italian restaurants I went to and worked for before getting the allergy, but not enough to reduce it from a 5 star review.

A celiacs dream! Amazing gluten free Italian food. I’ve had several dishes here – the chicken parm, the bolognese, the gnocchi. All delicious and celiac safe. Good dairy free options as well.

Dietary restrictions: Everything is gluten free. Good dairy free options as well.

This place is like coming home to my old world Italian family. The ambiance is everything an Italian restaurant should be. Warm hospitality, accurate orders, quality food. The best part for me is that they are 100% gluten free. There is zero risk of cross contamination because they do not allow outside food or beverage inside, and there is no wheat in the kitchen. I can trust eating here safely. So happy and grateful for Senza Gluten! Wish I lived closer so I could dine here more frequently 🙏🏻

Dietary restrictions: This is the safest place to go for anyone with wheat restrictions. Celiacs or gluten intolerant can dine here stress free

One of the best gluten free places I’ve eaten. The food was incredible! The service was brilliant too, from the maitre d to the waiters. They were polite and helpful

Really good value for money and would recommend!

They take cash or Amex which is noted on the menu. The waitstaff also inform you of this. There’s a ATM machine in the restaurant should you need it too

One of the best restaurants in the country for Celiac Disease or gluten free people. The food is all delicious whether or not you follow the diet. The fried calamari appetizer is light and pairs perfectly with the two sauces they give you for dipping. The chicken Parmesan was one of our standout entrees. Fried perfectly, it comes with the perfect amount of melted cheese on top. The veal chop was our other favorite, served with crispy red potatoes and flavorful string beans. The veal itself had a truffle sauce that tied the whole dish together.

I definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for Italian in the area, gluten free or not! Keep in mind that they only take cash.
