Dear Gluten, It’s Not Me, It’s You by Jenny Levine Finke

(3 customer reviews)

Dear Gluten, It’s Not Me, It’s You is the essential “breakup manual” for anyone diagnosed with celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, or an autoimmune disorder. Written by certified integrative nutrition coach and fellow celiac disease patient Jenny Levine Finke, this book moves beyond simple dietary swaps. It offers a comprehensive, science-backed, and emotionally resonant guide to truly healing your body from the inside out. From navigating the “sneaky bits” of hidden gluten to managing the emotional grief of a diagnosis, this transformational guidebook empowers you to move past survival and into a life of vibrant, symptom-free health.

The Breakup You Didn’t Know You Needed

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, it can feel like a devastating loss. For most of us, gluten wasn’t just an ingredient; it was the center of our social lives, family traditions, and comfort foods. In Dear Gluten, It’s Not Me, It’s You, Jenny Levine Finke perfectly captures this sentiment by framing the transition as a long-overdue breakup.

But like any toxic relationship, walking away is only the first step. To truly move on, you need to understand why the relationship failed and how to heal the damage left behind. Jenny explains that while “breaking up” with gluten is mandatory, simply swapping your wheat bread for a gluten free alternative isn’t a magic fix for your health.

Beyond the Bread Swap: A Holistic Path to Healing

Many people find themselves frustrated when, months after going gluten free, they still experience bloating, brain fog, or fatigue. Dear Gluten addresses the “missing link” in the gluten free journey: gut restoration. Jenny leverages her expertise as a certified integrative nutrition coach to explain how gluten damages the intestinal lining and why your body needs specific support to repair that damage.

This book goes deep into the science, supported by a foreword from renowned expert Dr. Tom O’Bryan, to show you how gluten contributes to chronic inflammation and autoimmune triggers. You won’t just learn what to avoid; you’ll learn how to nourish your system so that your body can finally stop being in “defense mode” and start thriving.

Navigating the Emotional Landscape

One of the most praised aspects of Jenny’s work is her focus on the emotional toll of a restricted diet. A diagnosis often brings a sense of isolation and grief. Dear Gluten acts as a compassionate companion, offering relatable personal stories and practical advice for navigating social situations, family dinners, and the internal struggle of feeling “different.” It reminds readers that they aren’t alone and that a gluten free life isn’t a life of “less”, it’s a life of clarity and physical freedom.

Mastering the “Sneaky Bits” and Living Symptom-Free

Gluten is notoriously elusive, hiding in everything from soy sauce to lip balm and even gluten free restaurant meals cross-contaminated in the kitchen. This guidebook provides actionable lists and strategies to help you identify these sneaky bits before they cause a flare-up.

By the time you finish the final chapter, you’ll have more than just a list of “safe” foods. You’ll have a roadmap for:

  • Deciphering labels like a pro.
  • Advocating for yourself at restaurants and social gatherings.
  • Implementing gut-healing protocols to speed up recovery.
  • Shifting your mindset from restriction to empowerment.

Dear Gluten, It’s Not Me, It’s You is more than a book; it’s the mentor you need to navigate the complexities of the gluten free world. Whether you are a “newly-diagnosed” beginner or someone who has been gluten free for years but still doesn’t feel “well,” this book provides the tools to finally say goodbye to gluten and hello to a healthy, vibrant you.

I really loved reading this book! The whole concept of breaking up with gluten is so clever and funny and so right on the nose! That’s exactly how it feels to go gluten free! And I loved the metaphor that if you’ve been stabbed in the gut, you can’t just remove the knife (or the gluten), you also have to heal. The author offers so much helpful advice on helping your body heal… I took notes! I love that she includes recipes at the end, too! If you’ve been diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity or intolerance, you MUST read this book! Your sense of humor and your body will thank you!

After receiving a confirmed diagnosis of celiac disease, I searched Amazon for a good book on the subject and how to approach gluten free life – and this was the one I chose based on the description and reviews. I’m very happy with my choice! I found it interesting, informative, supportive and, most importantly, helpful. I read it from cover-to-cover, and have it on my recipe book shelf as I’m sure I’ll want to refer to it again in future. I also find the author’s website and Instagram posts very helpful.
