For people with celiac disease, gluten is toxic to the immune system because it triggers an abnormal immune response and damages internal organs including the bowel and the nervous system. Symptoms of this disease include bloating, diarrhea, joint pain, and fatigue.

The damaging effects can first be felt in the small intestine where as soon as it enters, it’s recognized as foreign. This in turn triggers an immune reaction, which causes swelling.

Filmmaker Michael Frolichstein struggled with a series of “mystery ailments” before finally being diagnosed with celiac disease at age 40. His efforts to meet others who had suffered, as well as to get answers from experts, led him on a journey of discovery within his own family and beyond. This documentary explores what we can do individually and as a society to advance the conversation and raise awareness about celiac disease.

Director and Producer of “The Celiac Project,” Michael Frolichstein is a well-respected editor, director, writer and producer with more than 25 years of experience in the industry. Michael’s previous projects include work for A&E Biography, HGTV, Fox Television, Fox Sports, and the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs.

Through candid interviews with soul food cooks, historians, and scholars, as well as with doctors, family members, and everyday people, the film puts this culinary tradition under the microscope to examine both its positive and negative consequences.

Hurt also explores the socioeconomic conditions in predominantly black neighborhoods, where it can be difficult to find healthy options, and meets some pioneers in the emerging food justice movement who are challenging the food industry, encouraging communities to “go back to the land” by creating sustainable and eco-friendly gardens, advocating for healthier options in local supermarkets, supporting local farmers’ markets, avoiding highly processed fast foods, and cooking healthier versions of traditional soul food.
